چکیده

Recently the European Union has approved the EU Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD). This directive claims that by the end of 2015 a “good status of surface water“ and a “good status of groundwater” should be achieved (EU, 2000). To that end, the EU-WFD provides several guidelines for monitoring the water bodies, leaving the practical implementation to the local governments. Each region has to develop a consistent monitoring strategy and assessment methodology. To make sure that the new water policy will succeed, a profound analysis of the actual and future state of the water is necessary. In this context, the evaluation of emissions into river water will be important. The effects of a pollution load into the river can be evaluated using models. After the calibration of a model with a certain data set, the model generates predictions over a period of months or even years. However, those predictions are uncertain. Model outcome uncertainties can become very large due to: • measurement errors, • uncertainty in the estimated model parameter values, • model structure uncertainty and • the stochastic nature of the biological processes in river water. This paper presents a methodology to reduce the uncertainty on model parameters and as a result reduce the uncertainty in the final model outputs. Three main steps are described. The methodology is applied to the Dender basin in Belgium. The river water quality model used is implemented in the ESWAT simulator.

Propagation of uncertainty in diffuse pollution into water quality predictions: application to the River Dender in Flanders, Belgium.

The uncertainty of water quality predictions caused by uncertainty in the inputs related to emissions of diffuse pollution is analysed. An uncertainty analysis of the effects of diffuse pollution is essential to compare the cost and benefits of measures to lower those emissions. We focus on diffuse nitrate pollution due to fertiliser use. Using an efficient Monte Carlo method and Latin Hypercub...

Sensitivity Analysis of a Water-Quality Model Using Latin Hypercube Sampling

Decisions about water pollution control and management in river systems are increasingly based on predictions made with water quality models. Many uncertainties are associated with the development and calibration of such models and thus affect the model predictions. Therefore it often is necessary to perform a model reliability analysis prior to or as a supplement to model application to water ...

Evaluation of uncertainty propagation into river water quality predictions to guide future monitoring campaigns

To evaluate the future state of river water in view of actual pollution loading or different management options, water quality models are a useful tool. However, the uncertainty on the model predictions is sometimes too high to draw proper conclusions. Because of the complexity of process based river water quality models, it is best to investigate this problem according to the origin of the unc...

Integrated catchment modelling: an application to Molenbeek catchment, Belgium

Hydrological, hydrodynamic and water quality models are often used to simulate surface water in a correct way to be a good basis for decisions regarding the development and management of water resources. Molenbeek is one of the main tributaries of the River Dender basin (Belgium). The hydraulic model is implemented by using the MIKE 11 software of the Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI). It is a v...

The evaluation of uncertainty propagation into river water quality predictions to guide future monitoring campaigns.

To evaluate the future state of river water in view of actual loading or different management options, water quality models are a useful tool. However, the uncertainty on the model predictions is sometimes too high to draw proper conclusions. It is of high importance to modellers to minimise the uncertainty of the model predictions. Therefor different research is needed according to the origin ...
